What does CanTYD do?
In short, CanTYD empowers youth to overcome obstacle and pursue their dreams. Connecting with youth and creating relationships are essential to this. As such, we offer a wide range of recreational, artistic, and leadership building activities to engage our youth - from drop-ins at schools to holding workshops to creating films and publishing magazines.
When was CanTYD formed?
In February 1998, 17 Tamils students and graduates came together to form an organization dedicated to making positive changes in the lives of our youth. At the time, violence amongst Tamil youth was a very serious issue. Thus, the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre (CanTYD) was born.
How many people are involved with CanTYD?
Since 1998, CanTYD has grown from a fledgling 17-member venture to a thriving community organization servicing the diverse needs of Toronto's Tamil youth. With over 150 members, 500 young participants, and the support of the community at large, CanTYD continues to succeed in its mission.
How does CanTYD receive funding?
CanTYD receives funding from all three levels of government â€" municipal, provincial, and federal â€" and support from private sponsors and community donors.
In which schools does CanTYD provide outreach?
Currently, CanTYD performs outreach at Albert Campbell CI, Winston Churchill CI, and R.H. King Academy. We intend to expand our outreach to schools across the GTA.
What is the Awards of Excellence (AofE) about?
The Awards of Excellence is CanTYD's signature gala event created for youth by youth. Held annually, the Awards of Excellence recognizes high-achieving youth in the Tamil community. Awards are granted on the basis of Academic Achievement, Athletic Achievement, Overall Excellence, Performing Arts, Most Improved, and Unique Distinguished Effort.
