Since early 1997

 

 

Concerned community members gathered together to help their Youth and to lead them in a positive manner instead of the glorified gangster roles many

had started following.

 

 

 

   

February 15th 1998

 

 

17 community members had a meeting about what they can do to stop the negative portrayal of Tamil Youth and to help the Tamil Youth find role models instead of the glorified gangsters persona.

 

 

 

 

1998

 

 

Pilot project at Rosedale Heights Secondary School began conducting workshops for Tamil students in topics such as anger management,

relationships etc.

  

 

 

   

Fall 1998

 

 

CanTYD hosts its first ever, Making Connections targeting both Tamil and mainstream community, to discuss its objectives and network with both community and mainstream leaders to achieve its objectives.

 

   

 

December 8th 1998

 

 

CanTYD is officially Registered and formed.

 

 

 

 

 

1999

 

 

CanTYD debuts its own half hour Tamil radio program, Arumpum Unnarvukal

on CTBC.

  • Launch of Directions, CanTYD's magazine oriented towards Tamil youth, receives a great deal of praise

 

 

 

 

 

 

November 19th 1999

 

 

            First Awards of Excellence

Lieutenant Governor Hilary Weston speaks at our First Awards of Excellence program in 1999; scholarships are granted to 5 students

and awards to 20 students in total. This was a very high profile event

and allowed the Tamil community to shine.

Re-launched our CanTYD website, an excellent marketing tool and

promotional Tool for CanTYD

CanTYD receives an award from the Diversity Network of the Toronto District School Board for its achievements throughout the year.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

February 13th 2000

 

 

Tamil community and members of CanTYD protested against the Toronto Sun

for making publications claiming Tamils are masters of welfare fraud, master forgers and Tamil Women being forced into prostitution

 

In an initiative spearheaded by College, University Tamil Students Union (CUTSU); CanTYD plays a strong supportive role in mobilizing the community

for the Toronto Sun Protest due to controversial article on the Tamil

Community. Toronto Sun issued an apology and promised on having

coverage on the Tamil community that is more balanced and free of

 stereotypes.

Every Saturday had Drop Ins at the Scarborough Bluffs

   - Activities such as Volleyball tournaments, BBQ, swimming

Tamil community and members of CanTYD protested against the bias

publications by the National Post against Tamil people and youth.

 

 

 

 

 

June 2000

 

 

Medai Konal drama team formed in summer of 2000 started performing plays

at a number of culture shows. All of the plays dealt with youth related issues

and were received very well by audiences.

August 2000

 

  

Release of a Research Report based on a year long study examining the

needs of Tamil Youth in Toronto. This report generated a lot of interest for various stakeholders in the Canadian Tamil community.

  • Culture Sensitivity training to Toronto Police Services personnel by CanTYD and other community volunteers.

  • Established Drop-In centers in 2000- Scarborough Youth Resource Centre, Silver Springs Public School, Bridletowne Mall & a few other locations.

  • CanTYD releases the results of a year-long research study examining the needs of Tamil Youth in Toronto in a report titled Toronto Tamil Youth: The Realities.

  • An Olympic medallist, prominent politicians and CEOs award over 20

  • high school youth at the 2nd Annual Awards of Excellence at the Royal Ontario Museum

CanTYD receives a large boost in corporate sponshorships from companies

such as Scotiabank, N2End and Teknion.

T.R.A.C Kolam 2001 - participated in creating the world’s largest Kolam measuring 4819 Sq ft.; the goal was to enter into the Guriness Book of

Records for the worlds biggest kolam

Launched our transition program in 2 neighbourhoods in Scarborough, which provides Grade 8 students moving

Participated in Dragon Boat at Centre Island First ever Tamil team (CanTYD)

in the world, after a post picnic was held at the Scarborough bluffs after the

race
