The Beginning of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre
A single bullet that took away a life full of hope and promise shook us all. To those concerned with the escalating spiral of violence among Tamil youth in the 1990s, it was the catalyst that spurred action within the community. In February 1998, 17 Tamils students and graduates came together to form an organization dedicated to making positive changes in the lives of our youth - the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre (CanTYD). Since 1998, CanTYD has grown from a fledgling 17-member venture to a thriving community organization servicing the diverse needs of Toronto's Tamil youth. With over 150 members, 500 young participants, and the support of the community at large, CanTYD continues to succeed in its mission. A glance back:

1998
  • 17 community members have a meeting to discuss what can be done to help Tamil Youth find positive role models.
  • Pilot project held at Rosedale Heights Secondary School. Workshops are conducted for Tamil students and topics include anger management and relationships.
1999
  • CanTYD debuts its half-hour Tamil radio program, Arumpum Unnarvukal, on CTBC.
  • CanTYD's youth-oriented magazine, Directions, is launched and receives great praise.
  • CanTYD hosts its first annual Awards of Excellence gala to acknowledge high-achievers in the Tamil community. Lieutenant Governor Hilary Weston is the keynote speaker. Scholarships are granted to five students and awards are given to twenty students.
2000
  • CanTYD releases report Toronto Tamil Youth: The Realities, the result of a year-long research study examining the needs of Tamil youth in Toronto.
  • Culture sensitivity training provided to Toronto Police Services personnel by CanTYD and community volunteers.
2001
  • Launch of transition program in two Scarborough neighbourhoods to provide guidance and support for Grade 8 students entering high school.
  • CanTYD's first documentary, Death of Innocence, is produced by the Medai Konal team.
2002
  • Launch of Community Mobilization Project, Project IMPACT, and Project T.H.A.M.I.L. at David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute, Bendale Business and Technical Institute, and Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School.
  • Launch of Project RANI at L'Amoreaux Collegiate Institute and Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute.
  • CanTYD holds a fundraising golf tournament, The CanTYD Open.
2003
  • Youth team enters Toronto Police Community Basketball Tournament.
2004
  • As part of Project THAMIL, Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute students coordinate Environment Day to clean surrounding neighbourhood.
2005
  • CanTYD launches Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) Community Mobilization Project outreach program at Jarvis Collegiate Institute.
2006
  • Amazing Race 2006 - CanTYD Runs T-Dot. Youth and mentors participate in a challenging obstacle course across Downtown Toronto.
  • CanTYD stages 12-hour overnight community Walkathon fundraiser at York University.
2007
  • CanTYD Youth Council (CYC) is formed to engage youth in developing a grassroots strategy for the organization. CYC launches its first Youth Forum and CanTYD Cup at David and Mary Thomson Collegiate Institute.
  • CanTYD partners with Tropicana Community Services in hiring six Tamil youth as summer CanTYD Youth Staff, allowing them the opportunity to build leadership skills.
  • Awards of Excellence gala with keynote speaker Justin Trudeau is held at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
2008
  • CanTYD celebrates 10 years of Breaking the Barriers, Building the Future, and looks forward to the next exciting decade of Moving Forward, Building a Stronger Community Together.
2009
  • Women's Leadership Day held on April 12th. Through discussion, art, and activities, the group aimed to help address personal obstacles, and encourage a healthy sense of self-esteem.
  • Committee Day held on May 9th. All committee members came together to collaborate on how their respective groups were operating. CanTYD's success and tribulations were discussed, and feedback on the day-to-day operations of CanTYD was voiced by volunteers.
  • CanTYD hosts three youth forums. The first, Youth Expressions, is directed toward addressing the rising concerns of the civil war in Sri Lanka. Due to overwhelming popularity, a second youth forum, Youth Expressions Part 2 is held. A third youth forum, Colour Me Canada, is hosted in celebration of Canada Day and its diversity. The forum discussed issues such as cultural identity, homosexuality, challenges in the local community, and gender roles in today's society.
  • CanTYD Cup, a basketball and soccer tournament for high school and university students, is held. The event allows youth an opportunity to compete in sports, meet new people, and have fun.
  • Walkathon held on September 12th and successfully raises over $2000 in pledges.
  • Spotlight, an artistic showcase featuring song, dance, drama, and speech, is held on October 10th.
