Maria Bernard
Program Coordinator
Maria became involved with CanTYD upon performing her Master's research, and found the organization to be a vehicle of real change in the lives of young people, in the community, and in various related institutions. As CanTYD's Program Coordinator, Maria's primary role is to supervise staff and ensure the smooth operation of projects on an ongoing basis. She also drafts reports to funders and the Board, and seeks new funding opportunities to expand existing projects or develop new projects based on growing needs. Previously, Maria volunteered with church youth groups to provide mentorship and leadership opportunities. Among Maria's hobbies are photography, painting, and reading thick, paper-weight sized literature. Maria has a B.A. in English and Communications from York University, a B.Ed. from the University of Western Ontario, and an M.A. in Communications from Carleton University.

Kavita Bala
Selvy's Circle Coordinator
Kavita joined CanTYD in June 2007 as a volunteer, and became a staff member in November 2007. As CanTYD's Selvy's Circle Coordinator, Kavita works alongside young Tamil females as well as parents, community partners, and school administrators in ensuring necessary services to Tamil youth. Prior to joining CanTYD, Kavita taught at a private school while volunteering with the YMCA. Kavita enjoys watching international films, and has a strong interest in learning about Indian and Asian cultures. Kavita holds a Bachelor of Arts in History as well as a Bachelor of Education.

Keerthana Kamalavasan
Operational Support Co-ordinator
Inspired by the achievements of Tamil youth at the Awards of Excellence, Keerthana joined CanTYD's Youth Council in November 2007. Prior to joining CanTYD, Keerthana was a camp counsellor at Milliken CRC Nature Nuts summer camp, and a member of the Formal Committee at Albert Campbell Collegiate. As the Operational Support Co-ordinator, Keerthana oversees the transition of staff and volunteers in the organization. A former Awards of Excellence recipient, Keerthana is motivated to ensure that all youth get the opportunity to fulfill their potential. Keerthana is currently pursuing a B.A. in Political Science at York University.

Sathees Mathivanan
Youth Outreach Worker
Sathees joined CanTYD in August 2009 in an effort to guide youth in overcoming challenges and barriers to reach their goals. As a Youth Outreach Worker, Sathees heads classroom workshops at Albert Campbell CI and Winston Churchill CI, and supervises the Healthy Living/Basketball Drop-in at Jean Vanier. Sathees has also volunteered at Youth Assisting Youth and at the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. An animal lover, Sathees enjoys playing basketball and admits to an obsession with watches. Sathees has a B.A. in Justice Studies from the University of Guelph-Humber.

Nikila Vijayakanthan
Events Coordinator
As a student with a desire to get involved with community work, Nikila joined CanTYD in May 2007. As CanTYD's Events Coordinator, Nikila has organized several events, including Spotlight and the Awards of Excellence. Nikila has also served as President of the Tamil Youth of Malvern Committee at the Malvern Family Resource Centre. Nikila's goal is to ensure that every youth has his or her voice heard. She is currently pursuing a B.A. in City Studies at the University of Toronto.
